Hospital Tank

It looks like my Gourami has 'Fin Rot' so instead of treating him in the main tank I have gone shopping and bought another tank, and all the kit needed to setup a hopital tank.

The tank is another AquaOne model, this time it's a 'Mirage 50'. Another smallish tank, but I'm a bit stuck for room and I couldn't justify buying a bigger tank as a hospital tank. The tank measures 50x30x31 and fits nicely on a bookshelf in my study. You can check out pictures of it on my Flickr account (Image).

The tank came as a kit with a hang-on filter, heater and gravel, thermometer etc, but I bought a Eheim filter to use instead as the standard one uses cartidges with carbon pellets, not much good when medicating. A small air pump, Jebo compact flouro lighting and digital thermometer rounded off the purchase.

To kick start the tank I've used a handful of gravel from my other tank, and also took about 10 ceramic noodles from the filter and put them in the bottom of the new filter, I had to trim the foam in the filter down a bit so they'd fit, but that is easily replaced and this should help the bacteria colonies get started. About 10L of water from the other tank went in as well.

I've only had one problem so far, and that was with the new lights I bought. The light was tested at the store, and when I plugged it in it worked fine. But when I moved it slightly it crackled and dimmed, and then went out! I switched it off, gave it a visual inspection, it looked OK, so I plugged it in again, and again it worked fine. But again, when I touched it, it dimmed and crackled... not good. I gave it one last try, it worked, and I left it alone. later when I came back to the room it was dead, and wouldn't start up again. So I guess I have a trip back to the store tomorrow. Unfortunately it was the last one in stock, so I guess no lights on this tank for a while.

Anyway, thats the new tank. Take a look at the pictures (Another Image) and leave me some comments, I want to here from my readers!
